Sodium bicarbonate is indicated in the treatment of metabolic acidosis, which may be due to diarrhea, renal disease, uncontrolled diabetes mellitus, circulatory failure due to shock or severe dehydration, cardiac arrest, and primary lactic acidosis

Sodium bicarbonate is indicated in cases of severe diarrhea often accompanied by loss of bicarbonate (especially in young animals)
