According to our records, from the beginning of December 2024 until now, the price of live pigs has been relatively stable at a high level; pig farmers are quite excited about the current price of live pigs. In particular, the epidemic situation and diseases that pose a risk of causing great damage such as African swine fever; blue ear pig; foot and mouth disease; avian influenza… have been well controlled and have not occurred in recent months and pig farmers have been well prepared in disease prevention and control.
Pig breeding is currently doing well, as piglet prices have increased sharply as piglet prices have increased.
Comrade Ngo Duc Thanh, Head of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine of Tra Vinh province (Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Tra Vinh province) said: the disease situation in livestock in 2024 is well controlled; there are no large-scale outbreaks. In particular, the meat prices of some livestock such as pigs and poultry are stable at a high level, and farmers are profitable. Since then, the work of caring for and protecting livestock has received more active attention from people; in which, the implementation of vaccination of some vaccines to prevent and control dangerous diseases in livestock has received a very good response from people.
In 2024, the development of livestock in the province has always been quite stable; in particular, the herd of pigs and poultry has shown a strong growth trend: the total herd of pigs is 295,000, exceeding the plan by 1.72% (increased by 51,570 heads); the herd of poultry is 6.57 million, exceeding the plan by 1.08% (increased by 1.25 million heads). Regarding the scale of farming, the whole province has 762 livestock and poultry farms; 05 livestock and poultry farms are granted VietGAP livestock farming certificates; 26 livestock farms (08 pig farms and 18 broiler farms) participating in the chain of CP Vietnam Livestock Joint Stock Company, Greenfeed Company and Vietlight Company. The vaccination rate for dangerous diseases such as avian influenza is 3.12 million animals (reaching 98.7% of the plan); foot and mouth disease is 212,400 animals (reaching 53.49% of the plan); lumpy skin disease is 101,790 animals (reaching 53.26% of the plan); African swine fever is 21,800 animals (reaching 14.89% of the plan)…
With the price of live pigs in December 2024 fluctuating from 6.1 – 6.2 million VND/100kg of live pigs; however, from the beginning of January 2025, the price of live pigs increased sharply and fluctuated at 6.5 – 6.7 million VND/100kg of live pigs; along with that, the price of breeding pigs also increased from 500,000 – 700,000 VND/pig, currently breeding piglets in households are bought and sold from 1.5 – 1.7 million VND/pig (weight about 10 -11kg/pig). Mr. Tran Van Huong, O Rung hamlet, Phuoc Hung commune, Tra Cu district said: his family mainly raises pigs for meat and each batch sells 25 – 30 pigs (about 03 tons of live pigs). Currently, with the price of live pigs above 6.5 million VND/quintal, farmers can make a profit of 1.3 – 1.5 million VND/quintal; in addition, the price of animal feed has recently been relatively stable, only increasing slightly (about 200 – 300 VND/kg of feed, depending on the protein content).
Ms. Cao Thi Thu Thuy, An Hoa hamlet, An Phu Tan commune, Cau Ke district said: her family often combines breeding pigs (maintaining 02 – 03 sows), with the high price of live pigs, the consumption of piglets is very strong because many households are re-herding and raising new pigs during this time. However, to effectively raise breeding pigs, it requires proper care techniques and disease prevention (vaccination).
According to Ms. Cao Thi Thu Thuy, after the sow is mated, about 100 days later, the piglets will be born and raised for another 20-25 days before being sold; on average, 1 sow gives birth to about 7-10 piglets; minus the cost and time of about 4 months (from the time the pig gives birth to the litter), the pig breeder earns 8-10 million VND/pig.
It can be said that currently, the people are promoting the development of herd restoration and new breeding for pig herds in the context of the sharp increase in live pig prices; is both a good sign, but also poses many risks, with great potential for disease risks if breeders and localities do not strictly manage disease surveillance; manage livestock herds; transport animal sources in and out of breeding areas, barns, etc.
According to Mr. Ngo Duc Thanh, the province will continue to develop and adjust the breeding plan in accordance with market developments and requirements; Continue to implement Plan No. 25/KH-UBND, dated March 25, 2021 of the Provincial People’s Committee to implement the Livestock Development Strategy, period 2021 – 2030, in the province; at the same time, develop and submit for approval the “Livestock Development Project to 2030, orientation to 2050”.
Maintain the development of concentrated, large-scale livestock farming areas for key products associated with the development of livestock product processing industry, food safety, meeting market demand. Reorganize livestock farming towards cooperation and linkage according to the industry value chain; implement management of breeding facilities.
Develop livestock and poultry farming according to the principles of ensuring biosafety, disease control, and environmental protection. Control the quality of breeding stock, encourage solutions to improve the stature of grass-fed livestock; effectively monitor and control diseases in livestock and poultry, preventing re-infection.
