Specifically, the price of live pigs that traders are purchasing fluctuates around 8.2 – 8.3 million VND/100 kg (100 kg), an increase of 2 – 2.5 million VND/100 kg compared to last year and a fairly strong increase in recent years.
Mr. Duong Tan Si, the owner of a pig farm in Tan Phu Dong district, said that with this price, each pig weighing 120 kg when sold, farmers can make a profit of 5 – 5.5 million VND in small-scale farming models, and if raised on a closed-scale farm, they can make a profit of up to 10 million VND/pig (weighing 120 kg).
According to Mr. Si, since the beginning of the year, pork has been priced, pig farming has brought high income, so it will be a driving force for farmers in difficult areas to pay more attention to herd restoration, development and restoration of pig farming to adapt to climate change, and natural disaster mitigation in general.
Farmer Truong Van A, residing in Phu An commune, Cai Lay district, excitedly said that the sharp increase in live pig prices promises high profits for farmers, encouraging Tien Giang farmers to re-herd and restore the pig farming industry after years of stagnation due to low prices and losses. He himself has been involved in pig farming for many years, even in the most difficult times, so he is very happy with the sharp increase in live pig prices, helping him boldly invest in barns and expand the scale of farming to take advantage of the current favorable opportunities.
In fact, the sharp increase in pork prices is the driving force for the recovery of the local pig farming industry, contributing to job creation and income for farmers; the total herd size has increased significantly compared to last year, creating an abundant supply of agricultural products for the market in the face of favorable price developments for farmers.
According to the Tien Giang agricultural sector, the province currently has a total pig herd of over 312,000, an increase of over 24,000 with an increase of about 4% over the same period last year. Districts with large pig herds include Go Cong Tay, Cho Gao, Cai Be, Tan Phu Dong.
Currently, seizing the opportunity of the sharp increase in pork prices, high profits for farmers, and at the same time, to promote the potential and advantages of the pig farming industry, Tien Giang is interested in overcoming the situation of small-scale farming, encouraging households to gradually convert to farm scale and concentrated farming. The province is interested in supporting investment funding and increasing the application of high technology in the farming process such as: building cold barns, applying technology that allows complete automation of the feeding stage. Thereby, improving the efficiency of farming while overcoming pollution, protecting the environment and public health.
According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Tien Giang province, the important orientation of the locality is to invest in livestock farming in the direction of bio-safety, disease safety as well as focusing on controlling the source of clean, healthy and good quality breeds – one of the prerequisites in the current sustainable livestock development – thereby, gradually reducing the situation of small-scale pig farming.
