For about 2 months now, the price of live pigs nationwide in general and Bac Giang province in particular has increased sharply, at times reaching 72 thousand VND/kg, causing the price of piglets to also increase sharply. Meanwhile, the price of chickens is falling sharply, greatly affecting herd restoration.
Specifically, the price of live pigs is fluctuating between 69 – 70 thousand VND/kg (up 15.8% compared to the same period last year). The price of imported piglets is 2.2 million VND/head from 6.5 – 8 kg (up 41%).

With the above selling price, farmers have made a big profit, so many businesses and livestock facilities have planned to re-herd. However, according to information from the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine (Department of Agriculture and Rural Development), the risk of dangerous epidemics is still very high. Therefore, people need to closely monitor the market situation, only re-herd when ensuring safety conditions, choose to buy breeding animals at reputable, licensed facilities. Proactively vaccinate to protect livestock, supplement some vitamins to increase resistance for pigs in the cold season.
While the prices of pigs and other poultry such as ducks and geese have increased sharply, the prices of chickens have decreased since before Tet.
Crossbred chickens and hybrid sugarcane chickens for free range are priced at 62-65 thousand VND/kg (down 23% compared to the same period last year), 1-day-old chicks are priced at 10 thousand VND/chicken (down 23.1%). Commercial colored-feather chickens are priced at 40-50 thousand VND/kg (down 26.8%), 1-day-old chicks are priced at 5 thousand VND/chicken (down 50% compared to the same period last year).
Explaining the sharp drop in chicken prices, the expert agency stated that in recent years, many provinces in the North have developed large flocks of chickens, and people’s farming techniques have been improved, leading to a sharp increase in supply. Faced with this reality, farmers need to calculate reasonable herd restoration in the coming time.
It is known that the total pig herd in the province currently reaches 890 thousand heads, the poultry herd is 20.6 million heads (including 17.5 million chickens). Currently, Bac Giang’s livestock products ensure supply to meet people’s needs and are sold to neighboring localities such as: Hanoi, Hai Phong, Quang Ninh, Lang Son.
