After a prolonged slump, chicken prices have soared, yet paradoxically, many stalls at wholesale and local markets are closing due to supply shortages.
After a prolonged period of plummeting prices that left poultry farmers facing heavy losses, chicken prices have surged sharply over the past month. On average, prices have increased by 12,000 to 15,000 VND per kilogram. Despite the strong rebound, many stalls at wholesale and traditional markets have had to close due to a shortage of supply.
Mrs. Hoa, a poultry vendor at Khuong Dinh traditional market in Hanoi, said her customers usually order indigenous colored-feather chickens. In the past, she could easily pick up chickens from her usual suppliers at the wholesale market — just grab, weigh, and pay. But for the past two weeks, she’s had to search through the entire market just to find a few chickens.
According to several vendors at the Ha Vy poultry wholesale market in Hanoi, each stall used to buy and sell several tons of chicken daily. However, over the past two weeks, the volume has dropped by half — down to just 500 kilograms a day.
A representative from the management board of Ha Vy poultry wholesale market said that while the market used to receive 40 to 60 tons of chicken per day, it now sees only 30 to 40 tons.
“The volume of chickens has dropped by 25–30% compared to last month. Out of around 162 stalls, about 20 to 25 have temporarily closed due to lack of supply,” said Mr. Le Van Chung, Deputy Head of the Ha Vy market management board.
At traditional markets, many poultry shops have either stopped operating altogether or are selling in very limited quantities.
