Similar to pig farming, poultry farmers are actively raising their flocks to prepare products for sale to meet the strong demand for consumption at the end of the year.
According to statistics from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the total number of poultry in the country is estimated at 567,528 by the end of October; an increase of 2.6% compared to the same period in 2023.
Industrial chicken prices in the North increased continuously in October due to limited supply, commonly trading around 33,000 VND/kg, some farms sold whole male chickens weighing more than 4 kg/head at 38,500 VND/kg. For colored feather chickens, prices remained stable compared to the previous month, trading around 42,000 – 46,000 VND/kg for 80-day CP hybrid chickens, 48,000 – 55,000 VND/kg for long-term company chickens.

In the South, although the supply of industrial chickens is quite abundant, the common selling price of chickens is only about 3kg/chicken, plus the erratic weather has increased the number of sick chickens, leading to a shortage of healthy chickens, pushing the price up slightly to around 33,000 – 35,000 VND/kg (over 3.5kg/chicken) but transactions are not common. For colored feather chickens, the price is stable at around 34,000 – 35,000 VND/kg for CP hybrid chickens 80 days old, 43,000 – 48,000 VND/kg for chickens raised by the company for over 100 days and 45,000 – 50,000 VND/kg for free-range chickens.
Notably, the price of industrial chicken in Dong Nai and Vinh Long provinces is commonly traded at 33,000 – 45,000 VND/kg, an increase of 1,250 – 3,250 VND/kg compared to the previous month. Meanwhile, for colored feather chickens, chickens raised by the company for 100 days, the supply of old chickens is still abundant, the slow consumption demand has led to a slight decrease in common transactions. According to records, the price of colored feather chickens in Dong Nai is at 33,385 VND/kg, a decrease of 4,615 VND/kg.
In October, the price of local chicken eggs also increased slightly compared to the previous month. Specifically, in Dong Nai, the average purchase price of local chicken eggs is at 28,625 VND/dozen, an increase of 400 VND/dozen compared to September 2024; The average purchase price of industrial chicken eggs is 20,375 VND/dozen, down 1,250 VND/dozen.

The selling price and demand for poultry meat and poultry products are expected to increase at the end of the year. Therefore, this is a good time for farms and households to restore their herds, ensuring supply for the market, especially during Tet. However, this is also a favorable time for livestock and poultry diseases to break out.
Statistics from the Department of Animal Health show that in October (as of October 28), there was 1 outbreak of A/H5N1 avian influenza in Nghe An province; the number of sick, dead and culled poultry was 8,000. Since the beginning of the year, there have been 11 outbreaks of A/H5N1 avian influenza nationwide (down 42.1%) in 09 provinces and cities; the number of sick, dead and culled poultry was 93,985 (up 2.63 times). Currently, the whole country has 01 outbreak in Nghe An province that has not passed 21 days.

Therefore, to ensure the highest production efficiency, farmers need to strengthen disease prevention; in addition to regular vaccination, additional vaccination is required when re-herding; and disinfection of barns is carried out. When an epidemic is detected, it is necessary to immediately notify the authorities for timely handling, to prevent the disease from spreading widely. In addition, farmers are encouraged to practice biosafety farming, focusing on ensuring quality and developing farming along the chain from farming to slaughtering, preliminary processing, processing and consumption.
