Pig farmers in Ha Tinh reveal why they let their herds listen to… bolero mus

The pigs are raised in enclosed rooms equipped with cooling systems and even get to listen to music — a unique farming method that Mr. Trần Văn Sơn in Đan Hải Commune (Hà Tĩnh) has been successfully applying for over a year.

In August 2024, after attending a pig farming training course organized by Quế Lâm Group JSC, Mr. Sơn, from Đông Biên Hamlet (Đan Hải Commune), began raising pigs using an organic, biosecure approach. Unlike traditional farming, this model follows a closed-loop process that incorporates science and technology, including bio-organic bedding. Notably, the pigsties are equipped with electric fans, mist-cooling systems, and… the pigs get to listen to music every day.

Mr. Sơn shared: “The music we play for the pigs is mainly cải lương (Vietnamese opera) and bolero. This method helps the pigs eat well, move less, sleep more, and expend less energy, which results in faster weight gain. The pigs can be sent to market 10–15 days earlier than those raised through conventional methods.”

Mr. Sơn regularly plays music for his pigs to listen to…

…so the pigs eat well, move less, and sleep better.

In addition to playing music for his pigs, Mr. Sơn invested over 700 million VND to build a closed pigsty system equipped with cameras, fans, and a modern mist-cooling system. This cooling system helps reduce the temperature inside the barn during hot days, creates humidity to aid in the decomposition of the bio-organic bedding, keeps the environment clean, ensures healthy pig growth, and guarantees safety from diseases.

Although it has only been in operation for a year, Mr. Trần Văn Sơn’s unique pig farming model has consistently maintained 8 breeding sows and 180 market pigs. The model not only delivers high economic efficiency but also contributes to protecting the environment in the residential area.

The closed pigsty, equipped with electric fans and a mist-cooling system, helps the pigs grow quickly.

Mr. Trần Quỳnh Thao, Chairman of the People’s Committee of Đan Hải Commune, shared:
“Mr. Trần Văn Sơn’s organic pig farming model is the first in the commune to apply scientific and technological advancements to livestock production, delivering sustainable economic efficiency.

Notably, the model uses bio-organic bedding, which has no impact on the surrounding environment. In the coming time, we will step up communication efforts and encourage local residents to build and expand organic farming models, thereby promoting local economic development in a green and sustainable direction.”

Mr. Trần Văn Sơn monitors his pigs through a surveillance camera system.

In Hà Tĩnh Province, there are currently 82 pig farming models in partnership with Quế Lâm Group JSC. All facilities operate under strict procedures, following an organic and biosecure approach that applies science and technology, along with bio-organic bedding, to livestock production.

Mr. Nguyễn Trọng Hương, representative of Quế Lâm Group’s Hà Tĩnh branch, said:
“Among the households raising pigs organically in Hà Tĩnh, Mr. Trần Văn Sơn’s farm — with its use of music, mist-cooling, and ventilation systems — is the first of its kind in Đan Hải Commune and one of the most exemplary in the province. Given the model’s effectiveness, we hope the people of Hà Tĩnh will continue to pay attention, invest, and expand such models for even greater results. The company is always ready to accompany and provide full support in professional and technical training so that farmers can confidently implement these models.”
