According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, African swine fever is likely to increase in the coming time.
On November 19, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Quang Ngai province has just submitted a document to the Provincial People’s Committee to issue a document directing the focused implementation of drastic and synchronous solutions to prevent and control African swine fever.
The report stated that, according to information from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, since the beginning of the year, the country has had over 1,452 outbreaks of African swine fever in 1,103 communes of 48 provinces and centrally-run cities, forcing the destruction of 81,030 pigs, 2.6 times higher than the same period in 2023.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, African swine fever is on the rise, which will affect the pig farming industry and food supply of Quang Ngai province.
African swine fever
Since the beginning of the year, Quang Ngai province has had African swine fever outbreaks in 329 establishments, 148 villages, 61 communes of 11 districts, towns and cities (Tu Nghia, Ba To, Son Tinh, Binh Son, Duc Pho, Son Ha, Son Tay, Tra Bong, Nghia Hanh, Mo Duc and Quang Ngai City) with a total of 3,543 pigs infected with the disease and forced to be destroyed, with a total weight of 170,486 kg.
The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Quang Ngai province submitted to the Chairman of the Provincial People’s Committee to issue an official dispatch directing departments, branches, People’s Committees of districts, towns and cities to strictly implement measures to prevent and control African swine fever.
Previously, at the end of October, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Quang Ngai province also provided instructions on safe pig farming measures after the African swine fever epidemic when many localities had passed 21 days and there were no cases of recurrence.
Accordingly, the price of piglets has suddenly increased, proving that pig farmers are massively restocking their herds. This is a very high risk for African swine fever to re-emerge if pig farming is not done properly after the epidemic. The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Quang Ngai province provided instructions on safe pig farming measures to promote production, processing and development of sustainable, closed, and biosafety livestock farming; ensuring meat output to meet consumption needs in the province during Tet and the 2025 Spring Festival season.
When monitoring detects abnormal signs in pig farms, pigs dying of unknown causes, it must be reported promptly for inspection, verification and handling of outbreaks according to regulations. Implementing the “5 no’s” in animal husbandry includes: no hiding of epidemics; no buying, selling, transporting sick pigs, dead pigs; no slaughtering, consuming sick pigs, dead pigs; no dumping of dead pigs into the environment; no using unheated leftover food.
Resolutely handle organizations and individuals who do not vaccinate, do not declare, hide epidemics, sell well, dump dead animals into the environment, etc. and buy and sell pigs, piglets and pig products floating on the market, of unknown origin, using fake documents and test results to defraud farmers.
